Gender Representation T5

To make a more equal society in terms of gender representation, media producers could make the gender pay gap equal, they could have more varied roles in adverts, movies and TV shows, whilst avoiding gender stereotypes.
There should be more lesbian, gay and people from various cultural backgrounds in all media productions, this would give out a more varied representation of gender.
Small changes could easily be made, such as advertisements for household items using more male profiles or white collar professions could be more widely attributed to women.

The Nature vs Nurture article gives evidence to support Judith's opinion. The article talks about, whether genetic and environmental factors have a greater influence on your behaviour. Do inherited traits or life experiences play a greater role in shaping your personality?

"For example, when a person achieves tremendous academic success, did they do so because they are genetically predisposed to be successful or is it a result of an enriched environment? If a man abuses his wife and kids, is it because he was born with violent tendencies or is it something he learned by observing his own parent's behavior?"

"A few examples of biologically determined characteristics (nature) include certain genetic diseases, eye color, hair color, and skin color. Other things like life expectancy and height have a strong biological component, but they are also influenced by environmental factors and lifestyle."

1.Definition of Patriarchal Society -
A system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.

2. I don't think we live in an patriarchal society anymore, because we currently have a female prime minister and a female monarch.

The role of men in the family has evolved. Men used to be the bread winners and the head of the family. Now, more than ever, women are taking different views on this. Family's in today's society are made up differently, for example single parents, lesbian and gay family's. This goes against the traditional patriarchal template of years gone by, with the head of the family, housewife and children.
This said, we do still have areas that need updating, such as the gender pay gap and the progression of women through various corporations.

  •      The gender pay gap isn't the only argument going on in Hollywood.
  •      Gender inequality's in Oscar winning roles is a hot topic of debate.
  •      Women are often stereotyped in Oscar winning film roles as wives and care givers rather than professionals.
  •      Women's sexuality is often highlighted by celebrating roles that are of a sexual nature,  whilst men are very rarely expected to portray such characters.
  •      The movie industry is currently showing women that they will only be recognized for their gender roles as mothers and wives or for their body's.

1. I think the main reasons for the lack of equality in video game characters, is the the dominant ideology that says girls don't play games, but boys do. When girls do come in to video games, just like films, the characters are very feminized. Their character traits are stereotypical women roles. The games seem to be aimed at their largely male target audience, therefore they want their characters they can identify with, ie males.
